You may be eligible for a refund or credit on GST paid between the dates June 20th, 2024 – December 20th, 2024. On June 20th, 2024 the CRA stopped requiring GST on counselling and psychotherapy services provided in provinces in which counselling is regulated by the provincial government (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Ontario and Quebec. In British Columbia, GST was required to be collected until December 20th, 2024, when Registered Clinical Counsellors were given notice by the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellor to stop collecting GST. If you have received counselling service after December 19th, 2024, you were not charged GST. On January 13th, 2024, a notice was also sent to Canadian Certified Counsellors that “tax exemption for CCCs is back dated to June 20, 2024 to align with the exemption for regulated Counselling Therapists and Psychotherapists”. As I am both a Registered Clinical Counsellor and a Certified Canadian Counsellor, you may be eligible for a GST refund through CRA. This would only apply to services provided between June 20th, 2024 and December 19th, 2024. Please note, that I collected GST on behalf of the CRA and have remitted all GST collected for the 2024 tax year. This was done before the notice was sent to counsellors on January 13th, 2024. I have been in contact with CRA and was advised to communicate with clients (post on my website), that a refund or credit may be obtained by completing and submitting the GST189 General Application for GST/HST Rebates form found at https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/forms/gst189.html. Please let me know if you require copies of your invoices as part of the process, and I would be happy to support. I apologize for the inconvenience. It is my sincere regret that the decision to stop charging GST for counselling services in BC was not made by the CRA on June 20th, 2024, and that that I may have had the option to stop collecting tax at that date.
